The Salted Moon – the Meaning and Origin

by Cynthia Saltman

I created the Salted Moon because I’m driven by an insatiable curiosity and the need to record and reflect on what I learn.

I’m passionate about creativity, wonder, joy, and wellness of body, mind, and spirit. I’m on a quest to learn all I can about creating a radiant life.

Cultivating a place where I could share all the amazing things I’ve learned, and continue to learn during this adventure, became a sort of obsession.

A scary obsession. So much fear given to the unknown. So much trepidation toeing the edge of my comfort zone.

At some point it became clear to me that it wasn’t up to me anymore, something bigger than me had taken over.

It was my purpose. My calling. My dharma.

It was through my yoga teacher training that I came heart-to-soul with my need to create a spot on the vast internet to lay down the words that had given me my life back.

As I pulled myself up and out of my black hole of hopelessness [1], the world felt full of possibilities instead of pending disaster. It also felt full of wonder and magic – even more than before.

A few falters and missteps have brought The Salted Moon into being. And I am in love with the idea of inspiring other women who have entered the most wonderous time of their lives, to strive for their best health and to live a beautiful creative life on their own terms, living their unique purpose.

My gift to you.

But why Salted Moon?

Why a Salted Moon?

Your health and radiance are determined by:

  • Salt in your food = what you eat
  • Salt in your sweat = how you move
  • Salt in your tears = how you feel
  • Salt in the ocean = where you spend your time

A little bit of salt makes everything taste better.

And, you know, my last name – Saltman.

Why the Moon?

My love of the moon starts with my love for night – the quiet stillness, a time for restoration and renewal, but also a pause before the beginning of a new day. The night holds promise and mystery. It feels a little more wild and ethereal than day and yet more grounded.

I used to go to bed late and wake up well before the sun. I’d roll out of bed and head out the door for a run before there was even a hint of color in the sky. The moon and stars were my companions, and I ran with my eyes fixed to the heavens. For years, this was my favorite time of the day. (Until I realized how dangerous it is to be out alone in the pitch dark and I became more afraid than rejuvenated.)

The moon doesn’t create its own light, it reflects the light into the darkness. And there is the waxing and waning, the cyclical nature of the power of the moon reminding us we don’t have to be strong every moment. It’s okay that we take time to close off a bit only to open again with all our might.

The moon symbolizes the rhythm of time, shadows, and illumination, hidden and known, and is often associated with feminine energy.

Unlike the sun, you can watch and ponder the moon. You can look directly as the clouds float by changing its color, brilliance, and shape. It’s hard not to feel its magic. And when you remember the tug it has on our planet and our bodies, stretching and pushing the tides of the oceans and ourselves, you can feel that magic deeply in your heart.

My name, Cynthia, is Greek meaning “Moon Goddess,” so there’s that as well.

Why a moth in Salted Moon?

Moths are mysterious. They are another connection to the night. Moths are active in the dark but attracted to light, so they symbolize a tug-of-war of opposites. Both beautiful and ominous. And while they symbolize transformation, they represent the shadow side of transition. Reminding us that there are often hard parts, loss, and challenges with change. But they also send the message that reminds us the light we seek is inside us and that with loss comes renewal.

What I find most fascinating is that if a moth shows up in your life, it’s a sign that now is the time to open up to your true self and uncover your hidden dreams. Awesome!

My mission for the Salted Moon

I am fascinated by the connections of symbols and metaphors in our lives. I am delighted when I find new ways to express deeper ideas. That’s why words are more than just words, and objects often have deeper meanings to explore.

Look at the things around you as if you’ve never seen them before. I created The Salted Moon so I can express myself, but more importantly, so I can possibly inspire others to experience wonder as well.

Here at The Salted Moon, you will find your digital home for information on longevity, whole health, purpose, and creativity.
